Default Word - Auto Update Fields: References, Page numbers, TOC, etc

I find the use of Fields to be limited because they seem to have to be
manually updated except for when you print. Unless you remember to update
the fields before you save or send as an email, the recipient can get a
document that has dead/ out-of-date references.

I can understand the performance problem with updating fields at run-time,
but it seems a preference or setting that all updates fields on Save or Send
would be easy to do.
