Default "Get updates" button doesn't work with Sharepoint?

Can someone explain to me how the "Get Updates" button is supposed to work in
Word? I've got a doc saved to a WSSv3 doc lib. One user
has it opened as Read Only on one machine. I have clicked Edit in Word on
another machine. I change the document, save the changes to the
server....the user who has it opened as Read Only clicks FileServerDoc
Management. Then they click Get Updates. Nothing. Zilch. No updates appear on
their read only copy.

We tried the same scenario by saving the document to a "Doc Workspace." We
see an additional "Update Workspace Copy" in the doc management task pane on
my machine. I click that, fine. Then we click Get Updates on the other
machine and Nada. Nothing. Zilch.

Tried the same thing by having the other guy Edit the doc (not read only).
Same result. No updates. Tried the same thing on a WSS v 2 site. Same result.

Is this a bug? Or do I need my expectations set? What's "Get Updates"
supposed to do?
