Default Text in mailmerge fields compressing to single character space

I have a customer running Word 2007 on 2 computers with different model
printers and drivers. Both have the same problem. After opening a few mail
merge documents MS Word will seamingly pick a mail merge field font at
random, and then any place in the document where that same font and point
size are used the text of the mergefield is collapsed into the space of a
single character.

The attached .Jpg is a sample of what it looks like.

Once the problem occurs, any mailmerge document opened, with the same font
and point size, will display and print the same problem. Change the fonts
size and the problem clears. Also changing to another font will correct the
problem. I have seen the problem occur with Arial and Time New Roman fonts
at various time. I have tried re-installing the print drivers with no
change. Both computers have over a Gb of ram.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
