This symbol ì_ is at the start of a blank documnet in word or on a new
message in outlook. I don't know what i have pressed or selected but i can't
delete it. It seems to effect page view but i want to remove it.

Are you sure it isn't ¶? See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm

The underline part, which indicates the end of the document, indicates that
you're in Normal (Draft) view as opposed to Print Layout.

no it's not ¶ it's ì_

if you pres enter to insert a new space and then the delete key the ì
disapears and the _ stays, then it is possible to change page view and the _
does go away. I think it might be a glitch but it's very annoying, especially
since it's default. on outlook it appears after my signiture and you can't
get rid of it without changing the page view every email or taking word off
as the email editor.
