Default Attach Chapter numbers to Captions with different numbering style

I am using "Heading1" style for the chapters in my Thesis. the "Heading1"
style has been modified to be numbered with "I, II , III...etc".

Now, in the figures in each of the chapters, I can attach the chapter number
to the figure label easily. However, I do not want the figure to be Labeled
"Figure I.1" and "Figure II.1". I want it to be "Figure 1.1" and "Figure 2.1".
This means that I want the chapters numbers to be displayed in the chapter
titles as it is "I , II ,III..etc", but, it should be used in the figure
captions as "1, 2,3..etc".

I tried alot to solve this issue, but, I could not.

Any help is highly appreciated.

In Word, captions with chapter numbering depend on STYLEREF fields being inserted in the text. Each STYLEREF field repeats the "current" heading number, the way it is shown in the referenced heading. In other words, you can't do anything to change the number format, if you want to use the built-in caption feature.

I keep having the feeling that there must be some way to do this. After all,
in outline numbering, you can select "Legal style numbering" to have roman
numerals at Level 1 represented with arabic numerals at Level 2. You'd think
there would be some kind of switch for this, but there doesn't seem to be.

Well, not all fields support general switches, and STYLEREF is one of them.

Of course, if you created the chapter numbering with SEQ fields, it would be a different story, since those fields do support general switches (format switches to be exact). But obviously the chapter numbering would no longer be fully automated.
