how to put footnotes at the side of the page
How can i create a document where the footnotes are displayed in a column to
right or left of the main text (like a simultaneous translation) but with both the main text column and the footnote column side-by-side on the same page. The footnote column needs to behave exactly like normal footnotes with the footnote text appearing on the correct page, and the text flowing from main column to main column, and from footnote column to footnote column. |

This is not possible in current versions of Word.

You could fake it with a two column borderless table, as people doing
simultaneous translations do, but: A) they wouldn't be footnotes in any way, but text B) you'd have to handle all the numbering manually, or at least half of it C) it'd be a real hassle that hardly seems worth it--on a Letter/A4 page, it's little more trouble to glance at a footnote than a margin note. I'm not even sure InDesign or Quark Xpress, the big page layout programs, have support for that, and that feature would be much more up their alley. If you are eventually heading for a web document (where sidenotes make a ton of sense and footnotes do not), then try google--I've seen some web tips on doing this with CSS recently.
