Default How do I keep my Word doc from getting misaligned from PC to PC?

I have written a technical paper in MS Word using a windows XP laptop. But
when I copy it to a desktop machine the formatting is all misaligned.
The text does not fit on pages the same way, diagrams seem to overlap the
text etc.

How do I preserve my formatting?

thank you very much.
