Default detect document change

Is there a way to detect that a document's content has changed? There is no
such event. Am I limited to tracking document.characters.count?

You can use vba to check whether the document has unsaved changes. e.g. a
macro containing the following

If ActiveDocument.Saved = False Then _
MsgBox ("Not Saved")

will pop up a message box if unsaved changes have been made.
