Apostrophe as in class of '06
I must find out how to make a single quote curly yet in the right direction.
Example: Class of '06. Cannot use straight - required to use curly - time consuming. Any suggestions? |

Insert the character directly, instead of trying to get AutoFormat to
change a straight quote for you. Make sure NumLock is turned on. Hold down the Alt key while you type the number 0146 on the number pad, and then release the Alt key. The character ’ is the closing curly quote in most fonts. Here's a couple. (Note: curly quotes will not show here. Any straight quotes that appear here are intended to symbolize curly quotes, unless otherwise noted. You will first need to turn on Smart Quotes if you have not already done so: Tools AutoCorrect & AutoFormat Options AutoFormat as You Type tab Straight quotes with Smart quotes box.) 1. With curly quotes (smart quotes) on, type something like: The class of' 06 I.e., with the quote mark after the word "of". It will be in the desired direction. Now change the spacing. Of course, this is cumbersome. 2. Use AutoCorrect. This takes a couple of steps to set up. With Smart Quotes on, type '06, with the automatic wrong-direction curly quote. Select and copy the '06. Move the cursor away from the selection. Tools menu AutoCorrect & AutoFormat Options AutoCorrect tab. In the Replace box, paste the wrong-direction '06. In the With box, type '06 (in this case, the quote mark will be straight. Smart Quotes doesn't work inside this dialog box). Press OK. Now, type a quoted word that has the curly quote in your desired direction, e.g.: 'book'. The quote mark on the right is the one you want. Select and copy it. Move the cursor away from the selection. Go back into AutoCorrect. Scroll down till you find the entry you just made. In the With box, replace the straight quote mark of '06 by pasting in the correct-direction curly quote. Press Replace, then Yes, then OK. To test if your entry works, type '06 in the document. The quote mark will at first be in the wrong direction. When you type the space or a punctuation mark after the 6, it will convert to the desired direction. You can go back into AutoCorrect and use the '06 entry to create entries for '04, '05, etc. by cutting and pasting within AutoCorrect, without having to go back and forth to the document. I hope this helps |

You can force an apostrophe in such constructions using the built-in
short-cut Ctrl+', '. That is, press the Ctrl and apostrophe keys together, release, then press the apostrophe key again.
