Default From a paragraph select a column

I have forgotten how to select a column from within a text paragraph. There
is a key combination with the arrows to select the column width and the
highlight can them be confined to a defined X & Y column for formatting.
Problem arises as by-product of using Microsoft's Document Scanning which
does not apparently allow one to select columns to scan.

Assuming that you are referring to table columns, you can do the
following: Press Alt+PageUp to go the first cell in the current
column, and then press Alt+Shift+PageDown to select the column. For

I don't fully understand what you are asking. Could it be that pressing Alt
and then selecting text with the mouse is what you're after?

Alt+drag. In Word 2003, be careful to hold the mouse button down long enough
to prevent its being interpreted as a click, since Alt+click opens the
Research pane.
