Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

I cannot get spell check to work in Word 2007 (using Vista). I purposely
missspell words and they are not underlined nor are the identified as being
misspelled when I check the spelling. I have checked the settings and am
using English as the language. Everything else looks ok.

Click the Office button, then Word Options and check the spelling tab.
Everything look fine there? If it does, try it again.

I don't have a spelling tab, but a "proofing" tab. When I click that and
view the spelling options, under the Word option, the first four blocks are
checked. I clicked OK. I then typed a document with errors. Nothing was
underlined, and when I checked spelling, it indicated there were no errors
inspite of the mannnny that I put in the document. My default language is set
to English.

I appreciate your help, Patrick. I purchased what I believe to be the
English Language version. I walked in to CompUSA in Austin and picked it off
the shelf. The package says, "Microsoft home and Student 2007." Any other
suggestions?

As language it correctly says English (US) in the status bar? Even when

The status bar does not mention English (US) or any other language. Nothing

On the "Review" tab, I looked at "Set Language." It is set to "English

I am baffled.

Does it show any icon left of English (US) when you go into Review tab,

Yes, it does have the ABC checkmark icon just to the left of English (US) on
the same line. It is the first selection. Still doesn't work. Still
baffled....

If you run spell check manually from the Review tab, it doesn't catch
any errors either?

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

Correct, it doesn't catch any of the errors, and there are many and obvious.
I also tried it on Excel 2007 and the same story there. I thought about
reloading everything, but am worried that may mess up my Microsoft licenses
and registration. Any other ideas?

I did as you suggested. It completed its work and made one correction, but
it wasn't the correction that would fix this problem. I even double checked

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

Hi ?B?SmltYm8=?=,

I even double checked
the language setting (Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office
Tools, Microsoft Office 2007 Language Settings) and verified that it was set
to English(US).

This is a long thread, so I may have missed it; apologies all around, if so:

Have you made sure the "Do not check spelling or grammar" check box is NOT
activated for the text in question?

Mmmm. OK, back to the really, really basic trouble-shooting steps:

1. Do you continue to see the problem if you start Windows in Safe Mode

2. How about if you start Word in Safe Mode (by holding down the Ctrl key)

3. Which program do you use as your email editor?

I appreciate your help. These are the answers to your questions:

1. I do continue to see the problem in Windows Safe Mode
2. I do continue to see the problem when I start Word in Safe Mode.
3. I use AOL for my email editor.

What is funny is my grammar checker works fine, the spell checker does not
work at all.

Any other ideas??

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

Since you mention an email editor, is the problem with spell check showing
up only in email? Because Word 2007 does not provide proofing tools for
email.

While in Add/Remove Programs and Office 2007 setup, did you try using the
Repair option? If not, try repairing your Office installation and see if
that resolves the issue.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

Email is not a problem. My problem is that spell check does not work in Word
2007. I have tried many suggestions and it still doesn't work.

Since you mention an email editor, is the problem with spell check showing
up only in email? Because Word 2007 does not provide proofing tools for

Thanks for joining in. I checked the "Do not check spelling or

grammar"

check
does not work.

Your continued assistance is appreciated.

Mmmm. OK, back to the really, really basic trouble-shooting steps:

1. Do you continue to see the problem if you start Windows in Safe Mode

2. How about if you start Word in Safe Mode (by holding down the Ctrl

key)

3. Which program do you use as your email editor?

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

Thank you for the suggestion, Beth. I was able to run the repair option and
received the acknowledgment that Word 2007 had been reconfigured. However,
the problem still persists. I simply cannot successfully run spell check in
Word 2007 inspittteee of the mannny spellling errrors I put in my documents.
Nothing gets underlined and the spell checker completes without identifying
any errors. I am baffled as to what to do.

I did as you suggested. It completed its work and made one correction, but
it wasn't the correction that would fix this problem. I even double
checked
the language setting (Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft
Office

set
to English(US). I even rebooted. Did not work. Any other suggestions.

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

At this point, the only recommendation left is to contact Microsoft

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

Hi Everyone -

This is Jim just letting you know that the problem has been resolved. I
called the Microsoft Support line (I have 90 days of free assistance) and
they used Regedit to reset the default values for the proof checker. I
certainly did not mess with them to begin with. When I installed the
software, I clicked on all the "recommend" settings. Don't know what
happened, but I am glad it is fixed. They used Easy Share to take control of
my computer and did all the work while I watched. Worked nicely.

Thanks again to everyone for your assisance.

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

Thanks so much for passing along the resolution - what you encountered is
indeed odd!

btw, did they happen to give you a support number? If so, would you mind
emailing it to me (I wouldn't post it in the newsgroup). I can ask someone
from Microsoft to look it up and supply the exact steps they used to correct
the issue. It would be nice to have for future reference. :-) To obtain a
valid email address, remove NoSpam4Me from: .

Thanks again!

They used Easy Share to take control
of
my computer and did all the work while I watched. Worked nicely.

Thanks again to everyone for your assisance.

Hi Eric,

We don't have any information yet about the solution to this problem.
Have you tried the suggestions in this thread already? If not, please do
so. If yes, your best bet right now is to call Microsoft product support
as well.

the email address!) and I've asked someone to look up the specifics for us.
Once we hear something we'll post the information in this thread.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for

Hi Everyone -

This is Jim just letting you know that the problem has been resolved. I
called the Microsoft Support line (I have 90 days of free assistance)
and
they used Regedit to reset the default values for the proof checker. I
certainly did not mess with them to begin with. When I installed the
software, I clicked on all the "recommend" settings. Don't know what
happened, but I am glad it is fixed. They used Easy Share to take
control
of
my computer and did all the work while I watched. Worked nicely.

Thanks again to everyone for your assisance.

At this point, the only recommendation left is to contact Microsoft

Default Spell check does not work in Word 2007?

Hi Beth,

As a guess, from the other times I've seen a similar case of this reported, the registry change that fixed it in those cases was to
locate registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\1.0\Override\en-US

and check the list of DLL and LEX entries to see if they're pointing to real or nonexistant files.

If non existant (probably a pair)
Rename these to oldDLL and oldLEX (although I suspect that exporting then zapping that key then running a diagnostic would also
work).

But, just a guess
