Default How do I use a field in Active Directory, in a Word document?

I'm trying to populate a field in Word 2003 with a users phone number. As
Word has no pre-defined variable for this - Name and address only - maybe I
could tap into AD for it, where it is included. Is this possible, or am I
being too convoluted; is there a simpler way of doing it?
