Default Simple Files Save Too Big

Working on complicated format in a file I have to save frequently to avoid
losing where I am. For a file that should end up at about 60 kb the
resulting file ends up at over 800 kb. How do I prevent this ? Or how do I
save the file to its natural size when all done ?
Curiously, such a save occured by accident one time, so I know it's
possible, but I can't re-produce it.
HELP !!!
