Hello,

It seems I can't get rid of this symbol. I've tried hitting the "show/hide"
button and that does nothing at all. I've closed out of Word (2003) and
re-opened and they are still there, even on a new blank document.

Any suggestions?

Look in Tools - Options and see what's selected for Formatting marks.

Uncheck all the formatting marks in tools options view and the toggle
will work for all of them.
