Newspaper columns: WordPerfect 5.1 did this amazingly easy - can Office/Word 2003?
Years back I use WP5.1 and it had (three) options for columns.
The one I really liked was the one where your columns ended up like this (copy between the --- and paste into text editor if the alignment does not show correctly): --- Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxx Xxxxx Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxx Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx --- If the formatting does not align properly above, basically the longest paragraph in eiether columns (or more, if there were say 4 columns) would be the starting point of the next paragraph in. AFAIK, all you had to do was press a certain keystroke combination and it would do the job for you. I think it was mentioned you could do this in Word by using a table. Is there an easier way, e.g. pressing Ctrl+Enter or something like that, to enable this or are tables the only way to achieve this? Seems amazing that a DOS program years ago was so simple! Thanks |

I am a little confused by your title, which says "Newspaper columns". You create newspaper columns by Format | Columns... - _not_ by using tables. Doesn't Format | Columns.. work for you? There are two types of column used in Word - snaking columns and tables.

If you want newspaper-style (snaking) columns, then you use Format |
Columns. If you want the equivalent of WP's "parallel columns," then you need to use a table. Start a new row when you need to "synch" the content.
