Default possible to have a linked autonumber field?

Hi
I'm writing a document that has numbered examples. Since I don't know what
the final order of the examples will be, I'm numbering them with the
autonumber field. Now, when I refer to the example, I use the number. Is
there anyway to insert another autonumber field that will be linked to the
one which numbers the example, so that if I move things around, the numbering
will update throughout references to the example.

So what I mean is something like the following:
+++++++++
Paragraph I:
Example [1 -- autonumber]
In example (1), we find evidence.

Paragraph II:
Example [2 -- autonumber]
In example (2), we find more evidence than in example (1).
++++++++++
If I move the second paragraph before the first one, then my sentence in
paragraph II will refer to the wrong examples. Example (1) will be (2) due to
the autonumbering update, but the numbers in the sentence won't update. I
have to go back and change the references manually. Is there any way to link
them such that they will update automatically?

I appreciate any advice, b/c the help file and online I only found
references to linking to objects external to the document.

AP
