If you save alterations to a document opened directly from an e-mail
message, the saves are made only to the temporary file that is created when
you open the document. For this reason it is not good practice to open
documents directly from e-mail messages. Instead save them to the hard drive
before opening. You may be lucky and find the temp file in the user temp
folder, but the chances are that Windows will have erased it.

Did you save it before editing it, or did you open it for editing and save
as you went? If the latter, it was saved to a temp folder and will have been
deleted when you quit Word. Always save to your document folder before
opening for editing.
