Default How do I control whether Word updates a style that's already been.

Using Word 2003. Help contains the following information regarding "Turn on
or off automatic style definition"
€¢ This option determines whether Microsoft Word defines styles
automatically, but it does not control whether Word updates a style that's
already been defined.

My question is this: How do I "control whether Word updates a style that's
already defined"? The default is that Word will update a style that's already
defined. How do I turn it off please?
