Default Microsoft Office 2003 Word & Excel freeze the computer frequently.

I could be doing a simple scoll of my letter or spreadsheet and the computer
becomes locked. I have to turn the computer off and reboot. The locked
computer will not respond to Cntrl-Alt-Delete.

If you are using a USB or Wireless keyboard, try a different USB port -
however this does sound like a screen driver problem. See if there's an
update available.
The crashes wilol have left all sorts of dross behind that you will need to
clean up http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm
