Default Footnotes have disappeared

Possibly some corruption in the document; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm.

I recently looked at a document that had similar problems. In that case, the
footnotes were visible in the footnote pane but not in Print Layout view,
and they were not printing. The problem in that instance, however, was that
the footnotes were in a table, and it was necessary to split a row to
resolve the problem.

I have an essay, which contains footnotes. All the footnotes are as they
should be i.e. a number next to the word in the text and the appropriate
footnote at the bottom of the page. However, the last four footnotes only
display the number - there is no footnote at the bottom of the page. Yet

the
footnote exists because when I hover over the footnote number, it tells me
what the footnote should say. Also if I double click on the number it
doesn't take me to the footnote text.

I have tried to insert more footnotes but it simply inserts a number and
doesn't direct me to enter the footnote text!

Please can someone help!!!!

Yes the footnotes that aren't displaying correctly are in a table! Sorry I
don't understand what you mean by splitting the row or how to do it!?!?

In the case I described, the footnote where the problem started was in the
last line of a row. Although the row was set to be allowed to break, it
wasn't breaking, nor was it moving to the next page. Because the row
contained just two cells, one of them empty and the other containing more
than one paragraph, it was possible to split the row into two cells. This
allowed the bottom cell to move to the next page, which solved the problem.
Apparently Word got caught in a loop trying to decide whether to go or stay
and ended up making a wrong decision.
