Default Style Organizer Copies Incorrectly (W2003)?

In Word 2003 and Windows XP Pro, I am trying to copy a single style from a
template to a document (that doesn't use the same template) with the style
organizer. The style is copied but not exactly. It loses its list format (in
this case, a lower case lettered sequence). What am I doing wrong?

Copying styles, especially numbered ones, can be tricky in Word. Copying the
style three times sometimes helps (for some peculiar reason), but if it
doesn't, you will have to manually add numbering to the style in the target
document.

Thanks. Figuring out what Microsoft passes off as "by design" and what's
really a bug is always a problem. Sounds like I'll pass this off as a bug.
