Tables of Contents
Could someone refer me to information about how to format a table of
contents? When I select a preset format, such as Formal or Simple, 1st line indents are imposed on headings. I don't even know how to tell whether the indents come from the "TOC style," or from my normal template. If I apply a style or directly apply paragraph formatting--say to hanging, which seems like how it should be--and increase the font size so they match my text, the numbers are too crowded. Obviously there are a bunch of adjustments, and my guess is Styles is where they should be triggered. But this TOC "style" seems a style like no other... Stephen Diamond -- srd |

Tables of Contents
Hi srd,
"When I select a preset format, such as Formal or Simple, 1st line indents are imposed on headings." It is rarely the case that preset formats suit your needs. You can select a format that comes close to what you have in mind, but 9 times out of 10 you have to modify the TOC styles anyway. "I don't even know how to tell whether the indents come from the "TOC style," or from my normal template." From both. The indents are defined in your TOC styles, which are stored in Normal.dot. You will use style definitions the way they are made up by Microsoft unless you explicitly modify them. Of course you can get the details by means of the Reveal formatting task pane. "If I apply a style or directly apply paragraph formatting--say to hanging, which seems like how it should be--and increase the font size so they match my text, the numbers are too crowded." This may very well be so. TOC styles differ from other styles in that they have to take into account the display of (possibly right aligned) page numbers. You may have to experiment a bit to produce a satisfactory display. I have a vague notion that I have not answered your question... but I cannot see what more there is to say about TOC styles. Success, Cooz -- PS: If this is a satisfying answer to your question and you're logged in via the Microsoft site, please click Yes to "Did this post answer the question?". Thanks.
