I have a document that was emailed to me and the automatic numbering is
messed up. How do I fix it?

How is it messed up? Was it a Word document that was e-mailed to you? Which
version of Word are you using?

Default automatic numbering

It is a Word document and we use Word XP for small business. I'll try my
best to explain. Some of the document still has automatic numbering in place
and some of the document has lost the automatic numbering therefore throwing
the part that is automatically numbered off. This is what I'm having a fit
trying to fix. Any help would be appreciated.

You say that part of the document doesn't have automatic numbering. Has
numbering been keyed in in that part of the document? Are you sure that
is's not all automatic numbering? Try this. Highlight one of the automatic
numbers and copy it and then paste it at the beginning of the paragraphs you
want numbered. Then click on F9 and see if it doesn't update for you.

Default automatic numbering

You may have to start from scratch. Numbering is very easy to mess up and
quickly becomes what has been described as "spaghetti numbering." You can
fix the document and return it to the sender close to bullet-proof. See: How
to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html. (For
bullets see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bull...olbullets.html, the
subject is related.)
