Default embedding objects - document size

My boss wants to embed documents as objects. He has about 20 documents
embedded, and now his document is about 44MB (they are all pdf files). The
files themselves are relatively small. A document this size is too large for
us. Is there a way to reduce the size of the document? (Linking is not an
option).

For all practical purposes, the answer is "No".

Embedding files as objects means embedding part of the OLE server application
in the Word file. This is very "expensive" in terms of file size.
