Default Formatting part of text

From that description, the root of the problem is most likely your friend's
computer. (Once selected, the "Automatically update" option stays on until
you turn it off.) The fix is in the article at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...eformatted.htm.

Since this is Word 2007, the problem *must* be an add-in, at least if
the Normal style is affected, because you cannot set the
"Automatically update" option for that style in the user interface.

I'm not sure the blame lies with me.
The document was composed on a friend's Word 2003. He found this effect
happening and it continued when I tried to edit the document on my pc.
Could this be so and in which case if I unticked the update-style
option on his version might that solve it?
