Default Spell check not resetting to check all text in outgoing email mess

How can I enable spell check to check all text. For some reason it says that
certain text is marked "do not check" I go in and manually click on the box
in tools/language/enable spell check but it automatically resets itself -
using Word 2003 and outlook 2003

Dana~

A style can have a language setting, trying looking at the style to see if
it's been set to Do Not Check Spelling under Language.

You can also try selecting the whole doc, clearing the Do Not Check under
Language and then go to Tools Options Spelling tab and click Recheck Doc.
I've had this happen and I think doing the two steps back to back has
cleared some "document issue" thing.

Thanks Lori - I tried your suggestions and it is still defaulting to "do not
check" this is frustrating!

Here's a laundry list of other things to try, after this I'm tapped out.

- Use the Reveal Formatting pane to see and check "direct formatting" at
the bottom to see more specifically what's going on with the text, if you see
anything about Asian Text ... Sorry you're own your own - pesky MS Proofing
tools ... grrr
- Look for hidden text, this includes Track Changes so make sure you're in
Final w/Markup
- Try changing the font to something "usual" like Times New Roman or Arial,
if you are using one of those, switch to the other
- Is the text in all upper or include numbers, if so clear those boxes
under Tools Options Spelling

If those leave you still having problems I'd use the sledgehammer

Try deleting your Normal.dot and your word temp files, look for any
undeleted autosaves that sort of thing. If all else fails, copy the text,
paste it into notepad and back into a brand spanking new doc, you'll have to
restylize it.

Lori,

You are a trooper - thank you! I think a sledgehammer might be in order!!!!!
This is happening from my signature file - for some reason I think that using
a graphic as my email letterhead is turning off spell check. If I type in
above the graphic - I just found out that spell check works (however I have
no formatting!) Below the graphic in my formatting spell check doesn't work -
I guess I can get in the new habit of writing everything above then cutting
and pasting - then using the format painter to change the format - YUCK!! An
inelegant solution!

I do appreciate your help - maybe this is just an outlook problem! Thanks
again, Dana

Dana~

We have a similar problem w/graphics in our GroupWise signature block
somehow effecting the underinglying HTML code when it hits other mailservers.
I say this because...

Check to see what the settings are on your graphic, look at the alignment
settings: Is it "empty" if so set to something specific or "not set" if
that's an option or vice verse. Look at the Alternate text, is that "empty"
trying adding something, or vice verse. Is there a hyperlink associated?

Did you embed the graphic in a table? I've seen docs that start with tables
do some weird things when they interact with other applications. Try
deleting the table and setting the alignment for the graphic.

You said the problem is with a signature block, do you have the spell check
problem with the doc as a stand alone?

I recommend changing them one at a time until you see if you find the problem.
