Default Master Document Question

I have a Master Document (that someone else created). What I believe is the
first section includes a TOC and links to subdocuments.

The first section has appropriate headers and footers, but several of the
first sections have no headers/footers. I've seen printed out versions of
this document and headers/footers are included on the first sections.

As I understand it, in Master Documents, each subdocument is in a Section of
it's own. Do the subdocuments automatically use the header/footer of the
previous section? If so, how is that defined.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I don't have an answer because I don't use Master Documents. However,
you may need the reason I don't more than you need an answer. "Master
Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not only
doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the limited
exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these newsgroups
is that using the Master Document feature is a good way to destroy your
document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are not even
working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said that there
are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and those that
will be corrupt soon. See
http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm for information on the
Master Document feature and workarounds. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Genera...ocsCorrupt.htm for more
information on what goes wrong, and
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Genera...MasterDocs.htm for ideas on how
to salvage what you can. See

Steve Hudson's instructions if you are willing to follow them very
carefully.

Based on what I've seen with this "document", I happen to agree with you on
"Master Documents". There are a lot of things (formatting at least) that is
not in the subdocument, but at some time appeared to be there.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get any history on this document so for
now, am just taking a snapshot of what's in there periodically and saving it
elsewhere. I've found a workaround to get what I need without fooling with
the master.
