Default document outline and links

I have a large document that will be posted for everyone in the company and
customers to view. Some employees are interested in only a few topics while
others use the whole document for training and then the trainees use only the
topics they work on.

I wanted to break it down into a master/sub document format. This way my
customers can search on the topic they want and click on the sub document to
expand it. I think that the master/subdocument only works in outline view.
When I switch to print view the subdocument expands making the convenience of
having this format obsolete. The consensus of the powers that be is that the
document will be posted in print view.

Any suggestions on how to break this document up (maybe with hyperlinks) so
I can keep the document master and sub documents in print view? Can you give
me instructions?

Hi Judy

Before you get too enthusiastic about master and sub-documents, please read
the following:

Why Master Documents corrupt

How to recover a Master Document

Perhaps a simple way to solve the problem is to put a table of contents at
the top of the document. By default, entries in the table of contents are
clickable, so a user can go straight to the section that interests them.

In the end, Word is a word processor. It's not designed to produce
dynamically changing presentations.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help. I am not doing the Master Sub Thing. By the way
just to let you know I have just started this job and am "the" Documentation
department. I am compiling information from prior documents that many others
have had their hands in. Once I have a handle on the Word help, then I am
tasked for online help.

There is a TOC for them to click on, however the content of each subject
will make the entire document very large, possibly 500 plus pages. So, I am
thinking of a heading then the hyperlink to a smaller document with the
information that should be under the heading. How does this sound?

For the online help I have to find a product that will produce online help
like Microsoft Office. I have always used whatever was available on
contracts that I worked on. I have just started this task by looking at many
different products websites. They all seem to do the same task. Anyone have
any suggestions for products that produce online help like Microsoft office?
