Default Number format field

In the Format, Styles and Formatting, Format Numbering, Outline tab,
Customize dialog box the Number format field contains the proposed format.
In this case, "1.1.1"

The "ones" in the format are shaded, I assume this means they are fields or
macros or something. Is there a place where I can look at the code behind
the numbers? I'm trying to figure out which ones to delete or move around.
