Default How can I make my document size 11 by 17?

I have a project for school and it must be done on 11 by 17 paper. I am
trying to create a document with two columns on this size paper and then
emailing my document to a printing store and have it printed there.
Unfortunately every time I go to the print preview half of my work is not
even on the page and it keeps saying that it couldn't fit. Even when I go
back to the page it wont let me type more than half of the page so I don't
know what to do.

Word can't generate a page size that the current printer driver doesn't
accommodate.

You have to install a printer driver for a printer that can handle the 11x17
page size. You don't need to have the physical printer, just the driver
software. The best bet is to ask the printing store what driver they use. If
it's a fairly common model, Windows probably has the driver available, or you
may have to download it from the printer manufacturer's web site.

Once it's installed, select that printer as the default printer, and then open
your document.

In the absence of a suitable printer driver you could install the free PDF
software PrimoPDF which will install a 'printer' driver that you can set as
active printer and which will allow you to setup a page size of 11 x 17. The
print shop should also be able to handle the PDF format (ask them).

I think the page layout you want is:

Size: Width 17 inches,
Height: 11 inches
Columns: Two
Orientation: Landscape
Margins: Mirrored

If this is what you want, then it would be better to use a letter size (8 ½
x 11) layout and to tell the printer how you want the pages arranged on
tabloid size (11 x 17) paper.
