Default Why does an equal sign in Equation Editor look like a T?

When I type the equal sign in equation editor it looks like a T with a little
thing on it. A minus sign turns into an up and down arrow.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks.

In the Equation Editor, go to the Style menu and click Define. In the
dialog, make sure all the dropdowns are set to Times New Roman (or a
similar "ordinary" font) except that the L.C. Greek, U.C. Greek, and
Symbol items are set to Symbol font.

Somehow the Symbol font was corrupted on my computer so the L.C. Greek and
U.C. Greek were set to Bookshelf Sym 7. I downloaded a new symbol font file
and replaced the existing file.

Thanks for the help.
