Default let footnote start on same line as previous footnote

How can I set up footnotes so that instead of each one starting a new
paragraph, they are continuous? E.g. instead of
(1) Freud, 1937
(2) Gates, 2002
I want to get:
(1) Freud, 1937 (2) Gates, 2002

Thanks.

Although you *can* accomplish this (with tabs and hidden paragraph marks),
you don't gain anything because Word still allows just as much space for the
footnotes as if they were still stacked.

I think there is a way to accomplish this, though it would take much patience
and the document would need to be already finished. Obtain a copy of the
footnote bar (ViewNormalfootnotefootnote separatorcopy the footnote bar
up to the paragraph). Then paste that pseudo bar into a new document and
begin haggling with the information notes. This is very hard because you will
have to judge between the amount of space to allot for the body text and the
notes. You will also probably have to create a new document and paste in your
footnotes from the original document but in such a way that they are no
longer footnotes.

I would be interested to see if this works out for you. Oxford Publishers
and others are able to pull this off. It is a very effective way of saving
space in the footnotes. If anyone knows of a typesetting program that does
this, I would like to know.
