Question RTF Escape Double-byte Characters

I am hoping that you can offer some insight, or at least point me in the right direction, for an RTF issue I am running into. In short, I need a scheme for escaping double-byte characters in a way that the doc can be read in Microsoft Word.

I am the developer of an iPad app that allows users to type their own text into the program. Then I do some very basic formatting and export to an RTF file. It works fine for Roman characters, but double-byte characters (e.g. Japanese, Chinese) have been a challenge to say the least. I have tried several approaches. The current best scheme is to generate a \ud{\uc0 ... } wrapper and convert the characters to \uNNNNN sequences.

Input:
blah は凄くいいアップです blah åèüñ blah

Escape Formatting:
blah \ud{\uc0ሹ9ₓ2ሶ7ስ6ስ6ቅ0 ቈ3ቐ3ሹ1ሷ7} blah \ud{\uc0\u229\u232\u252\u241} blah

It is working with TextEdit and Open Office but not Microsoft Word. Word for Mac 2004 and 2008 seem to skip the escaped characters altogether.

Thanks very much for your time and any assistance you can offer.
