Default Numbering documents (revised)

A sequential "reference number" must appear in the upper-right corner of the first page of each Word document saved in a particular folder.

For example:

the first document gets reference number 001
the second document gets reference number 002
the third document gets reference number 003
the fourth document gets reference number 004
etc.


How can I do this?
