Default Search function does not recognize Word documents with docx extens

I have just upgraded to a new PC but kept XP as my operating system. Whenever
I receive or create Word documents with the docx extension and later search
for them, my system cannot find "see" them so I am having to convert all Word
documents to the Word 97-2003 format so I can find them again. My boss is
also having the same problem with docx documents. Has anyone else had this
problem and is there a fix? Thank you

There is no reason at all why you cannot use or search for docx format files
in Windows XP. What do you mean by 'cannot see them'? How and where are you
searching for them? Are they not listed in Windows Explorer in the folder
where you saved them?

Hi Graham,

I mean that when I go to Start-Search-files or folders-Documents and type in
the name of the docx document, it searches like normal but it does not find
the document if it has a docx extension....I thought it was something odd to
my machine until my boss told me yesterday that she is having the same
problem with docx documents. That's when I decided I would see if anyone else
is experiencing this problem.

If you enter *.docx in the filename to search for does it not find the
files?
Are you displaying filename extensions in Windows Explorer?

if you are referring to using the Windows Desktop Search and if your boss is
encountering the same issue then more than likely you are using a corporate
version of Windows Desktop Search that is controlled by your administrators.
They need to make sure the new file formats are added to the indexing
service.

In the interim, if you're using Windows XP you'll need to use the Search
Companion which searched everything, not just those files that are in the
index. You can find it at the bottom of the left pane in Windows Desktop
Search. If you are using Windows Vista then you'll need to use the Advanced
Search options and specify you want to include files that are not in the
index. I'm not currently using Vista right now so I'm unable to provide
specific instructions but there should be a link below the Search Box for
the Advanced Search options.

Search for lcldocs.xml in C:\windows\srchasst\mui\0409
Edit it in notepad and add ;.docx after .doc in the Name="FileType" section
