Default Table, page layout tab, 'columns' cmd

I have a 3 column table 12 pages long; I want to show more entries of the
table on a page, but the 'column' cmd will not work.

Incidentally, the word 'column' is used 2 ways in the application:
a) 'column's in a table
b) 'column's per page

I want the table to appear in more than 1 column on the 'page'.

Thanks.

I think you're confusing two features: tables, and [snaking/newspaper]
columns. See if this makes things clearer:

Did not make things clearer.

I want to know how to 'snake' a multi-page table into columns on fewer
numbers of pages.

Default Table, page layout tab, 'columns' cmd

Put the cursor in the first cell then format columns two columns. The
table should shrink and reflow into two columns. You may no longer be able
to read the content.

1. where is 'format'?

2. I have been able to snake tables in the past without being unable to read
the content. Each row has a 3 columns: first column of 2 characters, second
column has 1 character, and the third column has 11 characters. Should be
able to snake this into at least 3 'snakes' per page.

Thanks.

Format - in Word versions up to 2003 is on the main menu bar.
In Word 2007, columns are on the Page Layout tab
