Default How do I insert symbols not in the symbol list?

I need to write out pronunciation of words and cannot find an upside down e
with a dot at the bottom of the e or a u with a dot on top. Can anyone help?

Arial Unicode MS font contains characters from the IPA Extensions character
subset. I see the schwa but not with a dot, nor the u you describe. You can
add dots using an overstrike field; see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Overbar.htm.

You can create your own using an Advance fields to combine the base
character with the diacritic. If you have only a few to do, that's probably
acceptable -- and you can assign the field sequence to an AutoText entry
with a keycode shortcut. Schwa and the under-character dot are certainly in
there somewhere; don't know about the inverted u.

Alternatively, download and install a phonetic font.

Thank you very much. The overstrike option did exactly what I wanted it to.
Excellent information.

Hi, Suzanne

This works great but it leaves a line under the dot. Do you know how to get
rid of the line? Thanks.

What are you using for the dot? Is Underline formatting selected in the
field? If you can, copy the contents of your field into a message (select
the text between the field braces of the field code as seen by pressing
Alt+F9).

Yes, I am using the underline and it is underlining the dot also. Ok, I have
it fixed now. Thank you so much.

Default How do I insert IPA symbols in 2007 Word texts?

I don't find the IPA symbols in the symbol list in 2007Word, which I started
using a couple of days ago. I'm a phonetician so it is a must to be able to
use them in word texts. Could anybody help, please?

Default How do I insert IPA symbols in 2007 Word texts?

Are you using LaserIPA, or something else? If LaserIPA, according to this:

http://www.linguistsoftware.com/liu.htm

The version of Uniscribe that ships with Word 2007 (Office 2007) does not
support the OpenType Layout Features in the IPA LS Uni font. Letters or
symbols without any diacritics may be typed in Word 2007, but diacritics
cannot be added. Therefore, Word 2007 does not support this font.

If you're using something else that also requires support for OpenType, this
might also be the problem.

If you're using SIL IPA93, go to this page and Ctrl+F for "word 2007":

http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/p...=FontFAQ_IPA93

Otherwise, Google-search ipa and "word 2007".

What font are you using? Times New Roman, which was the default font in
earlier versions of Word, and also Arial, which was widely used in those
versions, both contain the IPA Extensions Unicode Character set. Apparently
Calibri, the default font in Word 2007, does not include this character set.

You should download the SIL's Gentium font, which includes the
complete IPA, lots of non-IPA phonetic symbols and odd letters (never
before have I been able to type a wynn or a yogh), as well as
compatibly-designed characters for Greek, Cyrillic, and Vietnamese.
(The only quirk I've found must be a failing in Unicode: for theta and
beta, there are no IPA symbols, you have to get them from Greek.)
