From the Word 2003 help:
Show or hide program buttons on Windows XP Taskbar

Show multiple program buttons

1.. Right-click the background of the Windows XP Taskbar, and then click
Properties.
2.. Click the Taskbar tab.
3.. Clear the Group similar taskbar buttons check box.
4.. On the Tools menu in your program, click Options, and then click the
View tab.
5.. Select the Windows in Taskbar check box.
Show a single program button

1.. Right-click the background of the Windows XP Taskbar, and then click
Properties.
2.. Click the Taskbar tab.
3.. Select the Group similar taskbar buttons check box.
Each open window in your Office program is now grouped together in one
single button. Click this button and then click one of the windows to view
it. If you want a single button displayed for your program that opens the
program rather than a list of windows when you click it, do the following:

4.. On the Tools menu in your program, click Options, and then click the
View tab.
5.. Clear the Windows in Taskbar check box.
Note In some cases, your program windows may not display grouped in one
single button even after following the steps above. For example, if the
Windows XP Taskbar is displayed vertically, the windows may continue to
display as separate icons.

Show or hide program buttons on Windows 2000 Taskbar

Selecting this check box will display a separate button on the Microsoft
Windows 2000 Taskbar for each open window in your Office program. Clearing
this check box will display a single button for your Office program on the
Windows 2000 taskbar.

1.. On the Tools menu in your program, click Options, and then click the
View tab.
2.. Select or clear the Windows in Taskbar check box.

Jay,

But is there some way to show the buttons yet have the Word documents all
open in one window? The buttons are useful to navigate quickly, but the
multiple windows open clutters the screen.

Thanks,

Rob

In Word 2002 and 2003, you can clear the "Windows in Taskbar" check box on
the View tab of Tools | Options. This will put all Word documents on a
single Taskbar button. I think this is not what you want, but there is no
other way to combine Word documents into a single window. Since I run Word
maximized, I never see more than one document regardless.
