Ctrl+A to select the entire document, then go to Tools | Language | Set
Language and make sure the correct language is selected and the box for "Do
not check spelling or grammar" is clear.

This is very helpful. Thank you. I've been looking for how to do this for a
couple of years. The only thing I would add, to be sure folks understand how
to do this, is to actually highlight the primary language, even if it's
already checked, and then, after you OK the Set Language settings, run spell
check while the whole document is still selected. (I found that if I deselect
the document, Word still didn't recheck the spelling.)

On the Spelling & Grammar tab of Tools | Options, there is a box for
"Recheck document" that allows you to rerun spell check after Word thinks
it's done. See also http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/MasterSpellCheck.htm
