Default word creation date

Can anyone please help. I recently asked for a copy of a docuement that
it was claimed was sent to me a month prevoiusly. The author emailed an
attachment they claimed to be the original WORD docuement. However the
properties showed this had only just been created. Can I rely on this
or could it have been created when claimed. Thanks

No, but do you have a reason to suspect the person who created the file is
lying to you? All it takes is opening a file and saving it before closing to
change a date. If this is something for legal purposes, I'd definitely ask.
You could mention this date question but you'll never really know what the
truth is.

Open the document and use Insert, Field, CreateDate. It should display the
date the document was created unless the sender has been deliberate in
masking the date by opening and using SaveAs to create a new document from
it.

If you are really sure that it has been doctored and it is hurting you
financially, there are utilities out there that can sniff out hidden
metadata and reveal all that has happened to the document.

I think, more importantly, can he show you the original email with the file
attached?

Anne Troy shared this with us in microsoft.public.word.newusers:

the file attached?

Indeed, and an email can be embedded inside another email. I use this
all the time to transport emails from one computer to another AND keep
important metadata like date, original sender, headers,...

This is as simple as pump water: create a new email, and drag the old
email inside the new email.
