How to generate bilingual docments with captions and toc
Hi Markus
The headings and the Table of Contents are the hard parts here. I think I would proceed like this. Word style Heading 1 = German Main headings Word style Heading 2 = English Main headings Word style Heading 3 = German Sub-headings Word style Heading 4 = English Sub-headings etc You can modify the font, colour, paragraph settings etc for Heading 2 so it looks like Heading 1. And modify Heading 4 so it looks like Heading 3 etc. The basic principles for setting up heading numbering are at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word document http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html However, you will need to proceed carefully with your numbering. - Set numbering for Word Heading 1 as described in that article. - Set numbering for Word Heading 2 so that it has no numbers from the previous level, and turn off "Restart numbering after". - Set numbering for Word Heading 3 so that it has numbers only from Previous Level 1 (not 2). - Set numbering for Word Heading 4 so that it has numbers only from Previous Level 2. - etc Make *absolutely sure* that you when you want to modify the numbering scheme, you click in a Heading 1 paragraph first. Otherwise you will have a real mess! Now for your Table of Contents. By default, Word will include the heading styles in the TOC. But you need to use the Options in the TOC dialog box to set Heading 1 to be TOC level 1, Heading 2 is TOC level 1, Heading 3 is TOC level 2, Heading 4 is TOC level 2, etc. The captions, however, are easy. Insert Reference Caption. Click New Label. Create one label for the English version and one for the German version. Set up the numbering for each label in the same way. As long as you insert one English caption for each German caption, the numbering will work as you need it. If you do Shift-F9 to inspect the field codes you will see that a SEQ field produces a sequence of numbers. You need two sequences, one for each language. If you need it, you could create a Table of Figures using either the German label or the English label. But you couldn't create a Table of Figures that mixes up the two using the Table of Figures functionality. You could, however, produce a Table of Contents relying on the Caption style, and that would pick up both German and English captions in the order in which they appear in the document. Hope this helps. Shauna Kelly. Microsoft MVP. http://www.shaunakelly.com/word "Markus" wrote in message ...
