Default Documents always open in unwanted font

I am running Office 2000 on Windows XP.

Whenever I open a Word document on my computer, the document appears in ITC
Century Book even though it was saved in Times New Roman. This occurs on
documents that I've created on my computer and on documents created by
coworkers on their computers. Is there a way to turn it off? Or at least
have it default to Times New Roman (as that is the official workplace font)?

Or (less likely) the document is set to 'Automatically update document
styles' and the underlying template uses Century.

Adam, please check. It almost sounds like you don't have TNR on your PC,
or like your TNR is corrupt.

I'm able to use Times New Roman in Excel without the Word error.

I checked the Windows/Fonts directory and clicked on Times.TTF. It is
version 2.97 if that means anything. Otherwise I'm baffled.

I am able to save and open files in Excel without the error.

I clicked on the Times.TFF file in the Windows/Fonts directory and it is
version 2.97 if that means anything.

I can't think of anything else, Adam. Perhaps your normal.dot is whacked.

Take a look at Jezebel's response. I expect that somehow your normal style
in your normal.dot template got changed to ITC Century Book font. See
http://addbalance.com/word/defaultfont.htm. Also you are using documents
that are set to update styles from the template. Tools Templates and
Add-Ins. This should almost always be unchecked!
