Default Bullets Changing to Numbers and Visaversa

I am plagued by a problem that I can't seem to find discussed anywhere. I
will try to be clear and brief. I am using Word 2003 on a Windows XP laptop.

I set up a document (.doc file) to use as a "template" for styles I want to
use for a set of documents. In my sample document, I used predefined styles
List Bullet/2/3 and List Number/2/3 (total of 6 styles). The List Bullet
style set used bullets and differed only in the amount of left indention;
same for the List Number set although with Arabic numbers instead of bullets.

Ok so far but when I opened the document the next day, I found the following:
* List Bullet, List Bullet 2, and List Bullet 3 were all prefaced by a
number instead of a bullet.
* List Number was ok but List Number 2 and List Number 3 were prefaced by
bullets instead of numbers
List Bullet 2.

I reset all the incorrect styles but got a similar result when I saved,
closed, and reopened the document. I was originally trying to diagnose the
problem with indention changing when a new list's numbering is restarted but
instead of that behavior, I got changing styles.

Help with either or both problems is very much appreciated.

In Tools | Templates and Add-Ins, clear the "Automatically update document
styles" check box. Save the document.

Thanks, Stefan. I had already checked that based on another post and that
box was/is not checked.

Then you may want to treat the document as corrupt. See
