Default Custom menu item missing

Hello All,

I have a template which contains some menu customisation. In particular, on
the File menu there is a "Local Open" item and a "Local Save As" item. These
are linked to "LocalOpen" and "LocalSaveAs" macros in the template. The
template is in Word 2003's startup folder.

In the template, I deleted the "Local Save As" item from the menu (while
testing something) and later added it back. Restarted Word and it no longer
showed in the File menu. If I open the template itself I can see the item in
the menu, but not when the template is simply loaded as a global template.

I tried deleting the "Local Open" item and adding it back again to see if
this would get the problem, but it didn't; after a restart of Word I could
still see it in the menu.

Tried the suggestions in this link -
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/missingmenusetc.htm (My menus and
toolbars are missing and won't come back).

Started Word by "winword /a" in the Run dialog and manually attached the
template by means of "Tools/Templates and Addins". The "Local Save As" item
showed up in the menu.

Restarted Word normally and the menu item was gone again.

Renamed the Data key in the registry
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\ Word\Data) and restarted
Word but the menu item wasn't there. (Checked that a new data key had been
created.)

Copied the template into Word 2007's startup folder and the item showed up
in the Menu Commands group on the Add-Ins tab.

Opened the template in Word 2003 using the "Open and Repair" option (no
errors were reported) and saved it under a new name into Word 2003's startup
folder. Restarted Word and I could see two "Local Open" items in the file
menu (which I would expect) and one "Local Save As" item. When both copies of
the template are in the startup folder I get one "Local Save As" menu item,
but when I use only one of the templates (and it doesn't matter which one)
the menu item is gone.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Default Custom menu item missing

Hi Ed

If this were me, I would do the following:

1. Identify the location of your UserTemplates folder (Tools Options
File Locations). Exit Word, find the file Normal.dot in the UserTemplates
folder and re-name it to oldnormal.dot. Do a search of your hard drive and
make sure you have no extraneous normal.dot files lying around. If you do,
delete them.

2. Re-start Word. Word will re-create normal.dot for you.

3. Un-tick everything you see at Tools Templates and Add-ins in the
"Global templates and addins" list.

4. Use File Open to open your .dot file. At Tools Customize make sure it
tells you that you are working on the right file. Make the appropriate
changes.

5. One by one re-tick the items in the Tools Templates and Add-ins box.
Check your menus each time you add back an addin to make sure that nothing
is awry. Make appropriate changes if necessary.

6. Use the Tools Templates and Add-ins Organizer button to copy any
customizations you had in normal.dot to your new normal.dot.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shauna,

Thanks for the troubleshooting tips. In my case, just re-naming normal.dot
did the trick :-)

Your keys are always in the last place you look - in this case, sort of
hanging there on the key-hook :-(

Regards.
