Default How do I display embedded objects?

I have word document full of "{embed equation 3 here}" instead of the
equations formed in equation editor. I would like the equations to appear in
the document as they did when I first wrote it. It seems that something
changes after saving the doc. and reopening it. Also, the "insert auto" in
the headers and footers all change back to the embed thing, as well, and I
have to toggle each item separately to reveal the original script.

First thought, go to ToolsOptionsView & remove the check for Field Codes.
the Alt+F9 keystroke tggles the codes on/off also.
