Default Help - A square appears in place of an apostrophe

I have a template that I got from someone else, but am editing with my
information. Every time I type "customer's" a square appears in place of the
apostrophe. Have tried numerous ways to get rid of the square to no avail.
Please help. Thank you.

Hi Leonara,

Check your Tools=Autocorrect settings to turn off the
replace 'quotes with smartquotes' feature and see if
that helps. It's possible that the font you've selected
doesn't have the characters needed to support that feature.
