Default New word doc from custom template still attatched to normal: why?

I have a custom template in the templates folder. When I create my new
document, I tell word to use that template. However, when I look under the
"Templates and Add-Ins" dialog for my new document, it shows that it is still
attached to the normal template. Why does it do this?

Whoops, that was because the template was a doc rather than dot. Behavior
seems the same otherwise, though

Only a .dot template can be attached. If it's a document, you're just
creating a copy, and it's still based on Normal.dot.
