Default is there a way to know how many words you`ve written

I`m writing an essay and I need to know if there is a way to tell how many
words I`ve written?

Which version of Word are you using? In Word 2007, the word count is, by
default, in the bottom left of the window.

And in Word 2003 or earlier, you can click on Tools | Word Count.

....and in Word 2000 it is Tools | Word Count
