Default Inserting a space where it's not wanted

I have Vista (64 bit) and Word 2007. Never had problems in word since I got
the computer one year ago. Suddenly today, every time I type an apostrophe
in a Word document (don't can't etc.), a tab space (about 5 spaces) is
automatically inserted after the apostrophe. Can't delete it (and don't want
it in the first place). No idea why it's happening. Checked my language,
region and keyboard settings and everything is properly set to US. Does
anyone have any suggestions? (As you can see, the apostrophe problem is only
when I use Word.) Thanks in advance.

This is a different description from your other posting. In it, you don't
mention not being able to delete whatever being inserted. Is that the case?

I would begin by checking for an AutoCorrect replacement entry for the '
character. But, if it can't be deleted, then the problem sounds like some
kind of program corruption. What happens if you start Word in safe mode?
Hold down the Ctrl key when you start Word, and click Yes, when prompted, to
starting in Safe Mode.
