Default How do I get rid of an error message for a table I've deleted

In a Word document there was a table which didn't work. I deleted it, but
every time I open the document I continue to get an error message telling me
to open and repair. there is no 'down arrow' beside Open which I am supposed
to use, and I can't get rid of this error message

Are you saying that in the File Open dialog there is no down arrow next to
the Open button in the lower right corner?
